Our Story
Niwezeshe, meaning ’empower me’, was born from a realization that too many young people struggle in silence.
Founded by mental health advocate Brenda Mghendi, we grew from small dialogues to school-based clubs.

Our Why
Kenya’s youth face rising rates of anxiety and depression, rooted in poverty and unemployment
We view mental well-being as a social responsibility
OUR THEORY OF CHANGE
Disrupting the normal systems of mental health interventions, shifting from institutional to community-based care.
EDUCATE
Providing evidence-based information to build coping skills.
ADVOCATE
Raising awareness and encouraging person-centred approaches.
EMPOWER
Cultivating an enabling environment for healthy behaviours.
IMPACT
A resilient, fulfilled and productive young population.
Our Approach
Disrupting normal systems by encouraging informal, community-based care that is affordable, accessible, and high-quality.
Empowerment through Advocacy
We break barriers and stigma by supporting community-led interventions. We believe access to the right information empowers people to fulfil their potential.
Skills Development
We build crucial life skills and social resilience. By providing training and resources, we empower youth to mitigate risky behaviours and address depression early.
Service Provision & Research
We strive to reduce the mental health information gap in Africa. Our goal is to create interventions that are locally suitable, sustainable, and easy to scale.
Our Intervention Model
Shifting focus from institutional care to community empowerment.
